Here’s how to get through when rainy days tend to dampen your mood:
• Try light therapy.
Expose yourself to full-spectrum bright white light, especially in the morning to help regulate your body’s natural sleep-wake cycle (circadian rhythm) and ease symptoms of depression. Light therapy may also enhance serotonin production, helping to lift your mood and reduce the risk of feeling low.
• Exercise indoors.
Turn up your favorite tunes and have a spontaneous dance session. Try a home workout video—whether it is yoga, Pilates, or a quick HIIT routine on YouTube. Get moving while being productive: clean the house with a mop or vacuum and check off those chores.
• Prioritize sleep.
Stick to a consistent sleep schedule throughout the seasons—aiming for the same number of sleep hours regardless of how bright or gloomy the days are. Dark and rainy days can leave you feeling more fatigued.
• Resist your urge to isolate.
Find ways to connect with others even during prolonged rainy weather. Isolation can contribute to mental health challenges, and the longer it lasts, the more intense its effects can become.
